Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church is part of
the Presbyterian Church (USA), the largest of the five distinct Presbyterian denominations
in the United States today. Currently numbering more than 2.5 million members nationwide,
the Presbyterian Church (USA) represents a re-union of the northern and southern churches
that split in the 1860's. PC(USA) churches link
together in broad geographic regions called Presbyteries. Presbyters, or delegates, from
each individual PC(USA) church meet at a Presbytery four times each year to manage
denominational business and to approve and dismiss pastors who are relocating from one
Presbytery to another. Each Presbyterian church
is governed by a Session made up of lay members of the church. These men and women are
trained and consecrated as Elders of the church. Members of the Session serve three-year
terms and meet monthly to manage church business. PHPC's Session is divided into six
missions with varying responsibilities: Administrative Mission
Just what it sounds like, this mission serves the other missions through raising and allocating budgets, coordinating staff, communications and the maintenance and care of our buildings.
Congregational Life Mission
This mission offers opportunities for members to be friends and to support one another. "Fellowship" planned by Congregational Life might be working together, just plain play (as in golf tournaments and Rangers baseball games) or a combination of each.
Education Mission
Each child, youth and adult can always learn more from the Bible's deep wisdom. The Education Mission plans and coordinates this program at PHPC.
Worship Mission
Three worship services on Sundays, holiday services and worship at special seasons of the year, plus baptism and communion and PHPC's exciting music program, all are coordinated by members of the Worship Mission.
Community Outreach Mission
Service to others outside of the congregation is managed by the Community Outreach Mission. PHPC supports missionaries overseas, ministerial candidates seeking ordination and the "courts" of the Presbyterian Church USA. In addition, local mission and summer versions which travel offer members and others a great variety of ways to share God-given gifts with others.
Evangelism and Membership Mission
A hearty welcome and a thorough understanding of what it means to become a Presbyterian and a member of this church are the work of this mission. Membership in a community of faith is a living, growing thing, not a commitment we make once and put on the shelf. This mission is charged with seeing that members are engaged at PHPC.
